APRIL 2021 - NCAA D1 LACROSSE
Lacrosse originated as a game played by Native American communities in the Eastern half of North America. Games were major events and lasted several days. In the 1860s, a group of French Jesuit missionaries were believed to be the first Europeans to see the game. Jean de Brebeuf named the game lacrosse. The sport has evolved dramatically since then. Participation in high school Lacrosse increased by 127% for boys & 157% for girls from the 2002/2003 to the 2018/2019 academic year. There is even a men’s professional lacrosse league. For this month’s challenge we are looking at the NCAA Division 1 (Division 1 is the highest level of collegiate sports in the US) men’s & women’s championship game & the win/loss and goals for each D1 team for a 5-year period. This could be a new sport for most of our community, so we are keeping it simple and asking you to learn a bit more about the game and give us some insights on who the dominate teams are and if there has been any shift in who is winning the championships. As always let us know if you have any questions, tag us with #SportsVizSunday on Twitter and be sure to complete the tracker.

MARCH 2021 - ADAPTIVE SPORTS
#DiversityInData, #ProjectHealthViz, and #SportsVizSunday have partnered up and our challenge for March data will be on adaptive sports. We have provided a few data sets for you to use; marathon wheelchair results from the Boston, Chicago, London, and New York Marathons (sorry Tokyo we could not find a good data set for you), historical information from the Paralympics, and UK Paralympic spending and results for UK athletes.
Our goal is to draw attention to these incredible athletes and to adaptive sports. According to the US Center for Disease control nearly half of adults with a disability do not get aerobic physical activity and are more likely to have heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer than non-disabled adults. Adaptive sports programs provide an organized, safe, and supportive community for people with disabilities. In Massachusetts, the Spaulding Rehab Hospital runs year long programs that include Biking, Golf, and Skiing. Participants get a physical and mental benefit from these programs.
We are hoping that you not only create a visualization that promotes these athletes, but that you also consider how you can help grow adaptive sports in your area. If you bike, golf, ski, or run see if there are adaptive programs in your area that you can volunteer at.
We look forward to seeing your visualizations and ask that you complete the tracker for your primary project. Be sure to tag all three projects on Twitter and let us know if you have any questions!
