Weekly Roundup 01.26.2025

I write this week's blog with one eye on the Australian Open Men's singles final. It would appear at the moment that Jannick Sinner has just a little bit too much for Alexander Zverev. In a couple of hours, I might be eating humble pie but it looks very much like Sinner will continue to be the man to beat for some time.

As I watch, I'm reminded of something brilliant that was shared with me the other day. In a bid to provide the maximum amount of coverage but without holding onto the full broadcasting rights for the tournament. The Australian Open TV YouTube channel has shown the matches in real-time but instead of showing the players, it has substituted them for Nintendo Wii like Avators. It's strangely captivating and after a while, any weirdness dissipates. As an example, check out the beginning of the match between Djokovic and Zverev. It's great fun.

Onto this week's round-up and we have a couple of high-quality pieces to share. Beginning with this fantastic-looking dashboard from Yash Sakhuja. Inspired by playing EA Sports FC 25, Yash has decided to create one of the slick-looking dashboards from the game in Tableau. And, I'm sure you'll agree, I mighty fine job he's done too!

Next up we turn to the world of F1 and Veronica Simoes has compiled this brilliant pictorial career journey of the legend that is Ayrton Senna. Packed full of interesting stats and some excellent annotations as the timeline progresses this is well-worth a look. Great job, Veronica!

Lev Akabas poses a fascinating question as he plots the scoring composition of the top 20 NBA players from this latest season. I'm no massive expert on Basketball but I imagine that player positions might play a part. It's certainly interesting to see quite a few players with a higher proportion of the harder to achieve '3-pointers'. Nice job, Lev.

Turning to the world of LinkedIn we find a great piece of analysis from Nick van Lieshout focussing on the probabilities of the 32 teams currently in the Champions League progressing to the next phases. Find your favourite team and see if you agree!

That's all for this week. Until next time, keep vizzing!
