Weekly Roundup 08.18.2024

Happy Sunday SportsVizSunday,

Yes the Olympics may be over, but we at least get to watch the Paralympics which is on until the 8th September, and welcome back with open arms the first week of the Premier League. Albeit, a losing opening game for West Ham this weekend. The season is still young.....

With that in mind. Our SportsVizSunday write up this week composes of just those two things!

Lets start with the Olympics content.

Will Sutton looks at the different ages of competitors. I love some of the sub stories within this, as you of course can compare across sports such as the extended ages in the equestrian, but we can also look at gender differences, look at the male vs female in football!

The zoom functionality has meant I can keep clicking through the different sports. I would love to dive further into if categorising by racket sports , or grouping on hand eye co-ordinated sports or looking at overarching sports such as cycling would still show large differences in ages between the sports.

Ryan also looks at the Olympics age distribution this week, opting to use a parameter switch between genders whilst ordering the distributions in alphabetical order. Ryan's choice to bucket ages up really helps emphasis the distribution (or lack of, in the case of cycling!)

A third visual we came across in SportsVizSunday HQ....

showing the exact same data as both Will and Ryan was this one by Steve.

Steve calls the youngest and oldest on average. The vertical order allowing for an easy way to rank the ages each sport against one another.

Zheng Haohao turning 12 at this years Olympic games, representing China in the skateboarding, is honestly mind blowing! What an achievement.

A awesome print I saw in the wild, was this gold medal reward visual for the SCMP. Plenty of countries reward their athlete for every gold medal they earn, as the Olympic committee themselves give no monetary award.

And finally,

we welcome back the Premier League season, Haaland continuing to be on fire, getting a goal in their opening win against chelsea 2-0. Check out from Opta what a goal scoring machine he really is.

That's it for this week, hope you enjoyed our new trialling of video content last week on Youtube and look forward to celebrating more sports in weeks to come.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, take care,

CJ & the #sportsvizsunday team
