Rather than kick off the round-up with my usual ramblings, I'm going to get straight to the point this week. Regular readers of the blog might not be aware that we have recently been recapping our monthly #sportsvizsunday highlights with a conversational YouTube video. They are a huge amount of fun to put together and we hope that you enjoy a little more in-depth look at some of our favourite eye-catching designs that come across our desks. The latest instalment, covering September vizzes is out now. Have a watch!
I'm a huge fan of Naresh Suglani's work and this latest F1-themed design is no exception. Telling the story of the supreme car designer, Adrian Newey, Naresh plots Newey's record-breaking successes all wrapped within his usual slick design style. Fantastic, as always, Naresh!
Get it up there for the big man to flick on! That essentially was the message for many years, across many a football pitch when the keeper was lining up a goal-kick. Tactics have changed somewhat, however, and in this viz, by Sidharth Suresh, we can see the numerous different approaches taken by teams in the Indian Super League. The heatmapping in Sidharth's design gives an overall indication of the strategy but I also like the individual lines that provide an immediate sense of any outliers to the overall shape.
We turn to the world of Baseball next and focus on arguably a smaller aspect of the game: the stolen base. In particular, the achievements of Rickey Henderson for a staggering modern-day record of 130 stolen bases across the season. In this viz by Gregg Hirshberg, we can see how successful Rickey was, which bases he stole, and which teams he was against.
A fascinating small multiple view by Owen Phillips, who tracks the top 30 scorers in the NBA last seasons. Rather than tracking where the points were gained from Owen has looked at the data through the lens of relativity to the overall league average. This creates some brilliant stories: those players who focus on scoring right under the basket e.g. Zion Williamson, those that have a mixed bag e.g. Jaylen Brown and of course, the one and only 'Mr 3-pointer' Steph Curry. So much to explore. Great job, Owen!
Last up this week, an interesting view up next by Michael Lopez who tracks the average NFL field positions following a kick-off.
A slightly shorter round-up this week than what we've seen in recent times. I can only assume a huge amount is being worked up in the background ready to launch in the coming days. Until then, take care, enjoy your sport and keep vizzing.
